- Will the abortion procedure hurt?
Although each woman's experience
is different, most women feel some degree of uterine cramping, similar to the kind
experienced during a menstrual period. We provide excellent and safe pain medication just
prior to the procedure. In addition to this, you can participate in your own pain
management through breathing techniques and visualization.
For more info. please refer to Abortion Procedures
- Will I be asleep during my procedure?
No. Following the medication
we provide you, you will feel drowsy and relaxed but able to communicate with the doctor
and counselor.
- How will I feel after the abortion?
Immediately following the
abortion most women feel drowsy and sometimes crampy. Usually, by the time you leave the
office, you will begin to feel normal.
- What are the consent requirements for abortion?
Spousal consent is
not required. Parental consent is not required for a mature minor, but for any woman under
18, it is helpful to involve an adult relative or a friend.
Special regulations apply for minors with New Mexico Medicaid or Presumptive Eligibility
for Medicaid; please call our office for details if you are 17 or under.
- When should I call to set up an appointment with the doctor?
Call if
you have a positive pregnancy test (home test is fine), 983-1213 in Santa Fe, or toll-free
1(800)-525-2207 between 9-5:30 M-F for an appointment. Se habla Espaņol.
- How many appointments does it take?
If less than fifteen weeks has
passed since your last period, all your appointments can be scheduled on one day. If
fifteen weeks or more have passed since your last period, you will need appointments on
two consecutive days. Call 983-1213 in Santa Fe, or toll-free 1(800)-525-2207 between
9-5:30 M-F for an appointment. Se habla Espaņol.
- What are the chances I will have complications?
Suction curettage
abortion is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in the United States and
is also the safest. Because Dr. Cies has had so many years of experience it is very rare
for a complication to occur. Less than 1% of our patients have reportable complications.
- What are the fees involved?
Fees are based on the length of the time
since your last normal menstrual period and the results of an examination in our office.
We believe that abortion services should be affordable, especially for women who have no
health insurance or Medicaid coverage. The cash discount fee includes preoperative
appointments, the abortion and post-operative checkup. The longer you have been pregnant,
the more expensive the abortion will be.
For current prices, please refer to Fees
- What about insurance coverage?
Many insurance plans cover elective
termination of pregnancy. Please check with your insurance plan about coverage details.
If you plan to use your insurance, please inform us when you make your appointment.
For more information, refer to Insurance Info.
